BROTHERHOOD OF MEN AND WOMEN

The Brotherhood coordinates educational and social opportunities throughout the year. As a service auxiliary of CMI, the mission is threefold: 1. Provide programs which encourage congregant involvement in CMI (e.g., coffee shop and breakfasts); 2. Support the congregation by providing volunteers for CMI events run by committees other than Brotherhood (e.g., cooking & serving food at the MITYOR Purim Carnival); and 3. Provide financial support (e.g,. fund a driver for the van that brings seniors to Friday night services, provide campership & scholarship money).

The CMI Brotherhood sponsors a “coffeehouse” each Sunday during the School year. The Sunday morning Coffee Shop gives parents a place to gather while their children are in Sunday School. The coffeehouse is in operation from 9:00 until 12:00 noon, except on days when the Brotherhood is sponsoring a breakfast program. A sign under the portico announces when the coffeehouse is in operation. The coffeehouse features coffee, tea, bagels, donuts and pastries. Visitors to the coffeehouse can read copies of the Sunday papers and chat with other visitors.

The Brotherhood sponsors breakfast programs several times throughout the year, which always provide interesting speakers and food for thought. Prior to the elections, we host an annual legislative breakfast and invite candidates running for state, local and national office. Breakfasts are free for Brotherhood members; there is a nominal charge for non-members. We encourage everyone to come.

The Brotherhood of Men and Women hosts an annual Deli Nite each Spring, featuring typical New York Style Deli foods - corned beef, pastrami, and turkey, on rye, of course, with pickles and cream soda, and salads. The evening is enhanced with local musical talent as well as a performance by a national comedian.

Each year, the Mishkan Israel Brotherhood hosts an annual dinner and service at which it presents the Brotherhood Award of Merit for outstanding service to the Temple. The award dinner is followed by a Shabbat service at which the new Brotherhood Board is installed.

CARING COMMUNITY

The Caring Community plans and coordinates activities to assist members of the synagogue. Typical activities include: providing rides to doctors’ appointments and services, making friendly visits and calls, cooking meals, doing grocery shopping, leading shiva and other services outside the synagogue.

We want to be part of the healing process. If you know someone in the hospital, who needs a pastoral visit, or other form of assistance, we’re just a phone call away.

The Caring Community is not just for those who are in need of assistance. Our tradition teaches us to live our lives through mitzvot…good deeds in order to repair ourselves and in turn repair the world (tikkun olam). To keep our Community strong, we are always looking for volunteers interested in performing mitzvot.

CMI CHORALE & OY STREET BAND

Singers of all ages are invited to join CMI Chorale. The choir sings at the High Holy Days and monthly at Shabbat services. All you need is a love of music and a desire to raise the ruach (spirit) of services.

The Oy Street Band jazzes up services with upbeat melodies. Whether you play guitar, drums, string, wind or reed instrument, all musicians are welcome.

Singers and musicians are also invited to join Cantor Giglio on the bimah for a solo, duet or as accompanist.

LIFE IS DELICIOUS COOKING GROUP

Life is Delicious is a group of CMI congregants who get together one or two Sunday afternoons each month to cook for the homeless shelters, the Ronald McDonald House and others in need. Congregants and their children are invited to join in the fun and help with the cooking or just come and schmooze.

SHABBAT WELCOME TEAM

The Shabbat Welcome Team serve as Greeters at regular Shabbat evening services and for the holidays. Their primary responsibilities are to make regulars, new members, and long-time congregants alike feel warmly welcomed – to know their presence is appreciated -- and to help make services an enjoyable and meaningful experience for all who come. They are there to say "Shabbat Shalom" and lend a hand. They introduce newcomers to other worshippers and help orient those unfamiliar with our building. They also answer questions, provide hand-outs, and help people find their place in the service, literally as well as figuratively.

Being a Greeter is a great for those who are outgoing as well as more reserved, those who know lots of people and those who feel like they know no one. Being part of the Team is a great way to meet other people and to perform the mitzvah of bringing a smile to someone's face.

YOUNG ADULTS

Over-stuffed suitcases; innumerable trips to Bed Bath & Beyond; joyful reunions with friends; agonizing decisions about which classes to take; homesickness; exhilarating freedom – these are just some of the hallmarks of the college experience. CMI aims to add to this mix the continuity and comfort of connection with our clergy, our community and Judaism by sending e-mail communications and holiday packages to CMI college and graduate students during the year. If your child is in college or graduate school, send us the street address, phone, and e-mail address for your student(s).

The Mishkan Israel Young Adults (MIYA) is geared for those in their 20s and 30s, including the adult children of our members. MIYA provides opportunities for young adults to get together individually and as families to socialize, network and build meaningful relationships with other CMI members. Events are held at the synagogue, members' homes, and locations around town. This year's events include Apple Picking, Challah Baking, Chanukah Party, Movie Nite, Shabbat dinner and services, social action projects, and more.

YOUTH GROUPS

MIFSY is our youth group for 5th & 6th graders. It is designed to promote Jewish learning through a variety of fun and exciting programs. The group typically meets on Sundays during the School year, from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

JYMI is our youth group for 7th and 8th graders. JYMI provides a great opportunity to meet and stay in touch with "Jewish" peers. Social events include: bowling; Shul-ins at CMI and other synagogues in the Northeast; movies; laser tag; MITYOR Purim Carnival; baking; and picnics. JYMI also engages in social action projects throughout the year.

MITYOR is our youth group for those in grades 9 through 12. MITYOR is involved in social action projects, educational, social and spiritual programs. Members have the opportunity to attend conclavettes and shul-ins with other NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) groups. MITYOR's biggest and most fun project each year is hosting the annual Purim Carnival. Our annual Iron Chef competition also is a big hit.
